This is a very beginner video on how to draw shapes.

Lesson Instructions

Don’t push hard

It is important to learn to draw lightly. Rest your arm on the paper or table and lift your wrist so it’s easy to control your pencil. Let’s practice.

Draw a line across the page as light and slow as possible. Now erase it. If you can’t see the line then you are drawing light enough.

Practice drawing different light lines.

Draw slowly

Drawing slowly is another big tip. When starting if a person draws slowly they have more control. Speed comes later.

Let’s practice with shapes. I like drawing the circle first. Draw lightly and slowly. Draw a perfect as you can circle. Because this is practice try another if it’s not right. A circle is the same width every direction.

Now the Square. The square has straight lines that are all the same length. I draw the two up and down lines then the back and forth line.

square

The rectangle is close to the square accept two sides are longer. Again you can draw the lines in any order you want. Try the back and forth lines first this time. Which way is easiest for you. Which one of your practices looks the best. Everyone has a different favourite way.

The triangle can be drawn a few different ways as well. I usually do the base first as a back and forth straight line. Then I lift my pencil and put it above or below in the middle of my line. I draw both angle lines one at a time towards the ends of the first line.

Ovals are another important shape that has to be learned. To draw that shape  l cheat a little, by drawing a straight line, then a u-turn and draw another straight line back then a u-turn to join and complete the shape. A real oval has curvy lines instead of straight lines. To begin try the cheaters oval.

Ovals

The last important shape I am going to get you to draw now is trapezoid.

trapezoids

That is like a triangle with the tip cut off. This shape isn’t as common as the other shapes but very important when you draw. So I start like I do with the triangle. I draw a straight back and forth line for the base. Then either above or below it instead of a dot I draw a little line in the middle. Make sure it is shorter than your first line. Now connect the ends of the lines together. That should be a trapezoid.  The more control you have when you draw your shapes the better your drawing will look.
